With support from the Finnish Embassy's Local Cooperation Fund for the CFP's Climate Change Adaptation Initiative (CCAI) project, we were able to train thirty (30) women in marginalized communities around Pemba to grow more food in the areas surrounding their homes using simple gardening techniques.  Many of the rural communities where CFP is active tend to not eat enough vegetables, and this is particularly true for the women and children in these communities.  The training was exclusive to women, and was held for three days from the 7th to the 9th of January.   It was led by CFP's Agriculture Officer, Siti Bakar Makame, and CFP's Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Said Abdalla Suweid.

We term the small-scale gardening Kitchen Gardens, but it involves a variety of techniques that can be adapted to the unique environment around each house.  The training consisted of the following topics:

  • Introduction to Kitchen Gardens - Why grow them?
  • Site selection for your Kitchen Garden
  • Garden designs - raised beds, double-dug beds, key gardens, container gardens
  • Land preparation
  • Nursery establishment for seedlings
  • Planting and transplanting
  • Field management
  • Harvesting and seed preparation
  • Compost preparation
  • Organic pesticides

Our follow up will consist of visiting each participant to assist with establishing their gardens in time for the start of the rainy season in March.
